When you’re considering knee replacement surgery, one of the biggest questions is often, “What is recovery really like?”
Every patient’s experience is unique, but hearing directly from someone who has gone through the process can provide valuable insight and reassurance.
Dr. Morris specializes in knee replacement surgery for patients throughout Kerrville, Boerne, Fredericksburg, and the surrounding Hill Country. For appropriate candidates, he performs knee replacements using the subvastus (muscle-sparing) approach, a technique designed to access the knee without cutting through the main quadriceps tendon.
Many patients appreciate this approach because preserving the quadriceps muscle may support a more natural early recovery, improved muscle function, and an earlier return to walking and everyday activities. While every recovery is different, the goal is always the same: relieve pain, restore mobility, and help patients get back to the life they enjoy.
Below, one of Dr. Morris’ patients shares their own experience after knee replacement surgery.
What Is the Subvastus Knee Replacement Approach?
The subvastus approach is a muscle-sparing technique used during total knee replacement surgery. Rather than cutting through the quadriceps tendon, the surgeon works beneath the vastus medialis muscle to access the knee joint.
By preserving this important muscle and tendon, many patients experience benefits such as:
- Less disruption to the quadriceps muscle
- Earlier muscle activation after surgery
- Improved early mobility
- Greater confidence when walking during recovery
- A more natural rehabilitation process
Not every patient is a candidate for the subvastus approach, and the best surgical technique depends on each individual’s anatomy, medical history, and overall goals. During your knee pain consultation, Dr. Morris will determine whether this approach is appropriate for you and discuss what you can expect throughout your recovery.
This Patient’s Knee Replacement Recovery Story, 9 Days Post-Op
Patient: “I feel a whole lot better, I mean, every day gets a little better.”
Dr. Morris: “Nine days out, living pretty good. You still taking pain medicine?”
Patient: “Nope. From the pain, you know, you’ve been putting up with me for the last few years. We’ve talked about it for a long time. The last couple of days, especially, or maybe the three days, I can really tell the difference.”
Dr. Morris: “Yeah, pretty good for a week from surgery, I have to give you that. The (subvastus approach) does recover a little quicker. Knee replacement, it’s a big surgery, you’re gonna continue to improve for months to come, and the swelling will get better, but you look pretty good. I have to give you that. Would you do it again?”
Patient: “Yeah, I would.”
Considering Knee Replacement?
If knee pain is limiting your daily activities and conservative treatments are no longer providing relief, knee replacement may be an option worth exploring.
Dr. Clint Morris takes the time to evaluate every patient individually and recommends treatment based on your specific condition, lifestyle, and goals. If surgery is appropriate, he’ll explain every step of the process so you know what to expect before, during, and after your procedure.
